Apple's first App Store malware now history

10 hrs.

A malicious app that made its way into Apple's App Store, and if downloaded then went ahead and?uploaded a user's phonebook to a remote server, has been removed by Apple. It's believed that the app was the first significant piece of malware to land in the App Store in the four years since it opened.

The app, a contacts utility program?named, "Find and Call," was ejected from the App Store?by Apple late Thursday. "Find and Call"?also found its way into Android's Google Play store, and Google removed it from there as well?Thursday.

Kaspersky Lab discovered the perils of "Find and Call," which includes a Trojan to do the dirty work. Once the user launches the app, Kaspersky says, "he?will be asked to register in the app using his email address and cellphone number (both fields won?t be checked for validity). If user wants to 'find friends in a phone book' his?phone book data will be secretly (no EULA/ terms of usage/notifications) uploaded" to a remote server.

The user, Kaspersky says, will be able to continuing using the app, but at the same time:

... the application steals data from the device (phone book and cellphone numbers) which are uploaded to a remote server to be used for SMS spam campaigns. Each phone book entry will receive SMS spam message offering to click on the URL and download this ?Find and Call? application. It is worth mentioning that the ?from? field contains the user?s cellphone number. In other words, people will receive an SMS spam message from a trusted source.

"Although there have been plenty of reports of Android malware, attacks targeted towards iPhone and iPad users are much much rarer," noted?Vanja Svajcer, SophosLabs principal virus researcher on that company's blog.

"Indeed, the most significant incidents we have seen of iOS attacks (the Ikee and Duh worms) only affected poorly-secured jailbroken iPhones."

Svajcer wrote that "Clearly Apple's 'rigorous' screening of apps before they're allowed in the App Store wasn't quite rigorous enough in the case of the 'Find and Call' app, as it was able to slip through the net."

Trudy Muller, an Apple spokeswoman, told Wired that the app was removed "due to its unauthorized use of users? address book data, a violation of App Store guidelines."?We contacted Apple for comment,?and will update this post if we hear back.

Svajcer of SophosLabs wrote that?it's probably "more accurate" to say that the app is " 'spammy' ?? as it leaks data all over the place in plain text via http (which means, of course, that the data could be intercepted and sniffed by someone wanting to snoop on you)."

While Apple and Google were quick to remove the app, he wrote,?"Obviously it would have (been)?even better if the app's lax respect of users' privacy had been spotted in the first place, and they had never been allowed into those online stores."

Hot temps pose threat to NM pets

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The city says they are seeing overheated and near-death animals almost everyday.

Doctor Nicol Vigil sees overheated animals at the city's westside shelter.

?We do everything we can when we get them in here but sometimes it?s too late,? Dr. Nicol Vigil said.

KRQE News 13 went along as Animal welfare officers patrolled the streets looking for lost animals or strays suffering in the high temps.

?Everyday I punch in I expect at minimum one call for a heat related dog, dogs in a vehicle, dogs walking down a road that's hot,? an animal welfare officer said.

Even loved pets can quickly be affected in someone's backyard if they do not have water and a place to escape the sun.

The city is sending out reminders in water bills, letting residents know just how quickly a pet can overheat and how to stop that from happening.

Dr. Vigil says the clinic has recently seen cases where good samaritians brought in dogs they thought had been hit by cars. But they hadn't been hit by cars; instead they were so hot their systems were shutting down.

Their body temperature was about six degrees higher than normal.

?So if we are looking at a 108 degrees this is life threatening, so we are dealing with that on a daily basis,? Dr. Vigil said.

At those temperatures it's hard to save the dog.

?They are victims of heat stoke like that,? Dr. Vigil said.

Animal Welfare workers are not the only ones looking for overheated animals.

APD?s canine unit is helping out too.

If you see a stray animal in distress or someone's pet suffering, officers ask that you put out water and call 311.

Richard Cain, West Virginia Man, Wants Supreme Court To Rule In Gas Case

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (AP) ? A Marion County man wants the state Supreme Court to weigh in on a lawsuit aimed at stopping an Exxon Mobil Corp. subsidiary from sinking as many as 18 wells on his land to reach his neighbors' gas.

Richard Cain, a 61-year-old farmer, filed a motion in Clarksburg this week, asking U.S. District Judge Irene Keeley to certify a question for the state justices. If she declines, he wants her to grant a judgment on his behalf and issue an order permanently barring XTO Energy from trespassing.

Cain concedes he doesn't own the rights to oil, gas and minerals under his 105 acres. But he argues that a 1907 deed at the center of the case never envisioned such extensive surface disruption.

XTO Energy plans to use about 36 acres to site wells. Cain contends that would use the best land and leave him mostly with steep hillsides.

XTO has denied doing anything illegal and wants the case dismissed. It argues it paid $63,000 for a pipeline right of way easement to transport oil, gas water and other substances across Cain's property.

But Cain says the justices should rule on whether a company has the right to occupy the surface of the land just because it controls the resources underneath. He argues XTO shouldn't be able to profit from what he considers illegal activity.

Existing case law supports "the common sense principles" underlying his case, the motion says. However, "the question presented has not been squarely answered by a controlling appellate decision."

It's Malia Obama's birthday! Where's the party?

Today the eldest First Daughter turns 14. But it's not easy sharing a birthday with the United States.

By Peter Grier / July 4, 2012

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, along with daughters Sasha, front right, and Malia back right, walk off Air Force One after arriving at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, June 15. Today is Malia's fourteenth birthday.

Today, July fourth, is Malia Obama?s birthday. Yes, we know ? it?s hard to believe that she?s turning 14. It seems like only yesterday that she wasn?t much taller than Bo the First Dog when they went on Rose Garden walks.

Well, maybe she was always a bit taller than that given that now she?s almost the same height as her Dad. But the big question is party, as in, will she get a birthday celebration or not?

Probably. The White House isn?t saying, since they don?t comment on First Daughter activities. ?But Malia, sister Sasha, and mom and Dad spent a long weekend at Camp David, returning to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue only this morning. It?s quite possible the weekend featured personal festivities, including presents (iPad? Jewelry? Clothing as stylish as her mom?s?).

The Obamas do believe in birthday parties, after all. Earlier this year Sasha, whose birthday is in June, got an 11th birthday fete at a Red Robin restaurant in suburban Virginia. Ten friends ? plus Malia and Michelle Obama ? participated.

Last June, Sasha, friends, and a passel of pink balloons had a celebration at Georgetown Cupcake, a well-known DC sugar emporium. You could tell something was up due to the presence of casually dressed Secret Service agents loitering in front of the store.

Of course, older sister Malia?s problem is that her birthday falls on the birthday of the country. People born on other big holidays ? December 25th comes to mind ? know the feeling. On the one hand, people forget it?s your day, too. On the other, you can pretend that all the hoopla is personal.

So in that sense Malia is participating in a big party, bigger than any Shasa has yet received. Plus, it will be televised.

That?s because President Obama is hosting an annual USO concert and salute to the US military tonight on the White House grounds. The headliner is country star Brad Paisley. There will also be a barbecue, games, a set from the Marine Band, and a great view of the Washington fireworks.

The whole thing is being streamed live from the White House website.

So now that she?s 14, will Malia go on the stump and campaign for her father?s reelection? We doubt it, but she and her sister are beginning to appear in Obama reelection ads.

That?s because both they and their mother rate high in public esteem. Michelle Obama?s favorable scores surpass her husband?s. There aren?t many polls that touch on Sasha and Malia, but one 2009 survey from Public Policy Polling found that 54 percent of respondents had a favorable opinion of the girls. Only five percent had an unfavorable opinion.

For the Obama camp the point is not to highlight the girls per se, but to highlight the president?s role as a family man. Michelle Obama has begun to use social media, including her Facebook and Pinterest accounts, to post pictures and reminiscences of the family, when are then widely reposted by fans.

York Mayor Worried after Mountain Lion Reports

A Nebraska mayor says he's concerned for the safety of his residents after several reported mountain lion sightings in the city in recent days.

York Mayor Chuck Harris said Tuesday he contacted Nebraska Game and Parks to express concern after a woman reported seeing a mountain lion around 5:30 a.m.

The sighting is consistent with the location of several other reports from citizens. York County Sheriff Dale Radcliff says he has absolutely no doubt he saw a mountain lion several days ago about two blocks
from the middle school.

Mayor Harris says he's worried that someone might get hurt, and that the mountain lion or lions are getting "bolder because they are willing to walk right down the street."
