Low LDL cholesterol is related to cancer risk
ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2012) ? Low LDL cholesterol in patients with no history of taking cholesterol-lowering drugs predates cancer risk by decades, suggesting there may be some underlying mechanism affecting both cancer and low LDL cholesterol that requires further examination, according to research presented March 25 at the American College of Cardiology's 61st Annual Scientific Session.
While scientific evidence supports the benefits of lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) to help prevent heart disease, previous studies of cholesterol-lowering drugs have suggested a strong association between low levels of LDL-C and cancer risk. This is the first study to examine the relationship of low LDL-C and cancer risk over an extended period of time only in patients with no history of taking cholesterol-lowering drugs.
"There has been some debate as to whether or not medications used to lower cholesterol may contribute to cancer, but the evidence so far tells us that the drugs themselves do not increase the risk of cancer. We wanted to take those medications out of the equation and just look at the link between cancer and low LDL-cholesterol itself in people who had never taken statins or other cholesterol-lowering drugs," said Paul Michael Lavigne, MD, resident, Tufts Medical Center and the study's lead investigator.
In a matched case control study, researchers used data from the Framingham Heart Study Offspring Cohort to assess the trend of low LDL-C for an extended period of time prior to cancer diagnosis.
They compared 201 cancer cases and 402 control cases that were cancer-free. Cases were matched on factors including age, gender, diabetes, tobacco use, blood pressure and body mass index. All subjects had no history of using cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Researchers reviewed data at four points in time prior to cancer diagnosis and found that LDL cholesterol values were lower in cancer subjects than matched controls at each point of assessment throughout an average of 18.7 years prior to diagnosis (p = .038). The trend for lower LDL-C in cancer patients compared with those who were cancer-free was consistent throughout the duration of the study (p = .968 for differences between time points). These findings did not change when controlling for high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels.
Dr. Lavigne cautions the current study does not suggest that having low LDL-C somehow leads to the development of cancer. He recommended that patients diagnosed with high LDL-C should adhere to cholesterol-lowering guidelines, including the use of medications, to prevent heart disease.
"There is no evidence to indicate that lowering your cholesterol with a medication in any way predisposes to a risk for cancer. We suspect there may be some underlying mechanism affecting both cancer and low LDL-C, but we can only say definitively that the relationship between the two exists for many years prior to cancer diagnosis, and therefore underscores the need for further examination," Dr. Lavigne said.

Chase Utley provided an update on his left knee condition Sunday in Phillies camp. And while he didn?t go into very much detail, the 33-year-old did acknowledge that he?s not going to be active for the early part of the regular season. Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer has the goods:

>> reporter: last year, the atlanta struggling school -- it published a series of reports including claims the strides were too good to be true and as extraordinary as a snowstorm in july. a state wide investigation by georgia's governor, discovered systemic cheating. 178 teachers and principles from dozens of schools were implicated. the atlanta scandal prompted the newspaper to look further, analyzing 1.6 million standardized tests , from 6,000 schools nationwide. 200 districts were found to have tainted scores.

The hustle and bustle of life can really be overwhelming for parents in general. Truly this is not an excuse or overated. Parents are working, going to school, probably taking care of an aging parent, wanting to make a career change, wanting to increase their income and possibly may need to lose weight themselves. Managing through everyday life can get a little tough when there are so many things to do.
Since parents are overwhelmed you can find the fast food drive thru line with several cars lined up ready and eager to buy high fat and high calorie food and drinks. Occassional fast food trips are harmless, however most parents (including myself) can literally be found going to the fast food joint for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is very difficult to admit this type of non-healthy food buying habit. However, its time for parents, adults and teenagers to take responsibility for their choices.
?San Francisco approves limits on toys with fast-food meals? is a headline from a Yahoo News report. San Francisco is the first city to restrict the fast-food industry?s practice of giving away toys with children?s meals, which is a new law. The law would ban toys from being given away with a kids? meals unless the meals have less than 600 calories, contain fruits and vegetables, and include beverages without excessive fat or sugar. This law will go in effect December 1, 2011.
Right on to this law, however when you ponder this situation you must ask yourself a question. Who is taking these wonderful children to the fast food restaurants in the first place? Well that has been answered. In a way this ruling is good because if parents are lining up at the fast food joints than at least they will know that when their child receives a kids meal the meal will be less than 600 calories and the drink will not be jam packed with sugar.
Fifteen percent of children are obese which puts them at risk for heart disease, diabetes and cancer reports the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are some states where the childhood obesity is 30 percent which is alarmingly high.
Although the reports seem bleak for todays youth it really is not. There is a simple solution for this growing epidemic. Children need to be provided with low fat, low sugar meals, low calorie, snacks and drinks. Most children and even adults snack which puts on the pounds gradually. Just by lowering sugar intake and or providing healthy snacks will help develop healthy eating habits.
In conclusion, there is a simple solution to prevent obesity in children which is the same solution for obese children which is to limit fast food dining, feed children low calorie meals, give children the opportunity to get plenty of exercise and replace un-healthy snacks with healthy snacks. Setup and Speed
Setting up the MX512 is standard fare. For my tests, I connected it to wired network (it also offers WiFi) and ran the tests from a Windows Vista system.
On our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software) the MX512 tied the Canon MX432, at an effective 2.2 pages per minute (ppm). The speed counts as acceptable for the less expensive Canon MX432, but is best described as tolerable but sluggish at the MX512's price. In comparison, the similarly priced Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J825DW ($150 street, 4 stars) came in at 4.0 ppm, and the much less expensive Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J430w ($100 street, 4 stars) was even faster, at 4.3 ppm

Graphics quality is a match for the vast majority of inkjets, making it good enough for any internal business need, including PowerPoint handouts and the like. If you're not too much of a perfectionist, you may also consider it good enough for output going to an important client who you need to impress with a sense of your professionalism.
Color photos in my tests were generally a match for drugstore prints, which makes them good enough for snapshots, as long as you don't have too critical an eye. However, I saw a serious problem with black and white photos showing an annoyingly obvious tint. If you don't print black and white photos, however, that's obviously not a concern.
Potentially a killer for the MX512 is its high claimed cost per page, at 6.3 cents for a mono page and 13.8 cents for a color page. In comparison, the claimed cost per page for the MFC-J825DW is 3.8 cents for mono and 11.3 cents for color. The 2.5 cents extra per page in each case works out to $10 for every 400 pages you print.
Depending on how much you print, the Canon printer's high cost per page can make the total cost of ownership far higher than for printers like the Brother MFC-J825DW with the same initial cost but lower running costs. That makes the printer hard to recommend. Ultimately, the Canon Pixma MX512 Wireless All-in-One works well enough, and it offers all the features you likely need in a personal MFP, but its best to stay away from it unless you don't need anything more than extremely light-duty printing.

The federal lawsuit alleges Urban Outfitters and its units Free People and Anthropologie violated the Navajo Nation?s trademarks since as early as March 2009, when Urban Outfitters began in-store and Internet marketing of clothing and accessories using Navajo and Navaho marks.
?In this action, the Navajo Nation seeks to protect its famous and distinct NAVAJO name and trademark, and to ensure that consumers are no longer deceived, confused, or misled in their pursuits to find and acquire authentic and genuine NAVAJO product,? the complaint reads.
Filed in U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico, the Navajo Nation?s lawsuit seeks declaratory and injunctive relief, attorneys? fees and monetary damages, including exemplary damages for willful and intentional conduct and punitive damages for willful actions pursuant to Title 25 of the United States Code (25 U.S.C. ? 305e).
The Navajo mark ?points uniquely and unmistakably? to the Navajo Nation, and with $500 million in sales of the tribe?s branded goods, the Navajo mark is one of the Navajo Nation?s ?most valuable assets,? the 36-page complaint argues.
Din? Development, a wholly owned corporation in Arizona established by the Navajo Nation Council in 2004, holds the tribe?s 86 registered trademarks and is authorized to issue use licenses.
Unfair Competition Claims
Plaintiffs argue that through Philadelphia-based Urban Outfitters? use of Navajo and Navaho marks, the international retailer has engaged in unfair competition with the tribe by selling the ?identical? types of goods sold by the Navajo Nation, and in many of the same channels of trade as the tribe?s own products.
?Simply put, a direct competitor should not be allowed to benefit at the expense of the Navajo Nation?s substantial investment to the detriment of deceived, confused, or misled consumers who seek authentic and genuine NAVAJO products,? counsel for the Navajo Nation argued in the complaint.
The Navajo Nation Department of Justice complaint filed Feb. 28, specifically, requests jury trial and a statutory-provided award of three times all Urban Outfitters profits generated by the marketing and sale of its Navajo and Navaho marked products.
Trademark Allegations
The Navajo Nation, in its civil complaint, asserts it has ?exclusive right? to sell goods under the Navajo name, noting that since 1943 the tribe of over 300,000 enrolled members has marketed and retailed clothing, house-wares and jewelry using its trademarks.
The Navajo Nation alleges Urban Outfitters and its unit retailers have violated at least 10 of the tribe?s trademarks through sales of items such as the Navajo Nations Crew Pullover, Truly Madly Deeply Navajo Print Tunic, Navajo Feather Earrings, Navajo Sock and Leather Navaho Cuff Bracelet.
?Urban Outfitters knowingly and intentionally used the ?Navajo? and ?Navaho? names and marks for its retail goods to compete directly with the sale of the Navajo Nation?s goods, which are sold using the NAVAJO name and trademarks,? the complaint reads.
Additionally, the federally-recognized tribe claims that publicly-traded?Urban Outfitters? use of ?Navaho? flouts trademark requirements of the Lanham Act (15 U.S.C. ? 1051 et seq.) since it the mark is ?confusingly similar? to the tribe?s Navajo mark.
The complaint for injunctive relief and damages asks the court to declare the retailer?s use of Navajo as ?scandalous and derogatory? under the Lanham Act, noting that Urban Outfitters used the tribe?s name to market its ?Navajo Flask? and ?Navajo Hipster Panty.?
Indian Arts and Crafts Act Claims
Plaintiffs allege, in addition to trademark violation, sales of Navajo and Navaho items by Urban Outfitters and its units violate the Indian Arts and Crafts Act (IACA; Pub. L. 101-644), a 1990 federal law that bars misrepresentation in marketing to wrongly suggest products are Indian-produced or the product of an Indian tribe.
The IACA provides for damages that are the greater of treble damages or $1,000 for each day on which the offer or display for sale for each type of good falsely suggests or suggested to be Indian produced, an Indian product, or the product of an Indian, an Indian Tribe, or an Indian arts and crafts organization continues at the time of filing.
The Navajo Nation, which has sovereign immunity, brought the civil complaint without waiving any of its immunities from counter-claims and cross-claims or defenses, the complaint asserts.
The tribe is represented by attorneys Brian Lewis and Henry Howe for the Navajo Nation Department of Justice and litigation counsel from the Seattle office of Keller Rohrback LLP.
The case is the Navajo Nation et al v. Urban Outfitters Inc. et al., No. 1:12-cv-0019, District of New Mexico (Albuquerque).

War effort hits new low; Karzai at "end of rope"
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Afghan President Hamid Karzai says he's at "the end of the rope," and a majority of Americans feel the same way.
Of all the past decade's setbacks in the endeavor to form a solid alliance with Afghanistan and defeat the Taliban, the war effort has been driven to a new low by the slaughter of nine Afghan children and seven adults allegedly by a U.S. soldier whose identity had been kept secret until late Friday.
A senior U.S. official said the suspect is Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, 38. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the legal case that is in its early stages.
The soldier was on his way Friday from a U.S. military detention facility in Kuwait to the maximum security prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., though Karzai demanded anew that he be tried under the Afghan justice system.
Karzai also is now insisting that U.S. forces retreat from rural areas immediately and let Afghans take the lead in security next year. But the White House and the Pentagon said Friday that nothing would collapse the war plan, even after the massacre, the inadvertent Quran burnings by U.S. soldiers and the deaths of seven American servicemen at the hands of their allies.
Polls have shown that up to 60 percent of Americans say it's time to end the war in Afghanistan. And that's not lost on the administration.
"The Afghan people are tired of war," Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, just back from Afghanistan, acknowledged on Friday. "The American people share some of that tiredness after 10 years of war, as well. All of that's understandable."
But he also said he is confident that Americans realize the U.S. needs to finish its work of stabilizing Afghanistan to ensure that al-Qaida cannot against use that country as a launch pad to attack the United States. His theme ? patience ? is likely to dominate the discourse in Washington and in allied capitals in the lead-up to a NATO summit meeting in Chicago in May.
President Barack Obama called Karzai on Friday seeking clarification on the demand concerning U.S. troops in rural areas, and White House press secretary Jay Carney said the leaders agreed to keep discussing the matter, which is at the heart of the military strategy.
"I think that the two men were very much on the same page" about gradually handing over security responsibility to Afghan forces, with U.S. and other international troops switching to a support role throughout Afghanistan sometime in 2013, Carney said. A final transition to Afghan control is supposed to happen by the end of 2014.
Another pillar of the war strategy is creating meaningful peace talks with the Taliban insurgents, but that, too, suffered cracks in the aftermath of the village massacre. The Taliban said it was no longer talking on terms set by the Americans.
A senior U.S. official familiar with the discussions said American officials presume that the timing of the Taliban announcement following Sunday's killings was an attempt to gain greater leverage. Officials have long calculated that the Taliban would not engage seriously in peace talks unless it had lost more ground militarily.
Despite calls for the Army suspect to be tried in Afghanistan, Bales was flown Wednesday to a military detention facility in Kuwait, where that country's officials expressed unhappiness that they were not first consulted.
It remained unclear when the Army would formally charge the soldier, who was said by his lawyer to be reluctantly serving his fourth tour of duty, his first in Afghanistan after three tours in Iraq in his 11-year military career. Much of what is publicly known about the staff sergeant has been disclosed by the lawyer, John Henry Browne, a veteran defense attorney from Seattle who came forward Thursday.
According to statistics provided by the Army on Friday, 107,075 soldiers, or about 20 percent of all active-duty Army members, have had three or more deployments to Iraq or Afghanistan over the past decade.
Browne said that one day before the rampage, the soldier saw a comrade's leg blown off. A senior defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss possible evidence in the case, said investigators have determined that the suspect had been drinking alcohol before the killings. The official said the role of alcohol in the case is still being studied. Browne has said the suspect's wife reported her husband did not have a drinking problem.
Karzai has often been critical of the American effort, and on Friday he toughened his talk even more in addressing a group of villagers visiting Kabul from the Panjwai district in Kandahar province where the slaughter of the 16 civilians took place.
"The fight is not in the villages, not in the houses of Afghanistan," he said, repeating a familiar theme. "It is not safe for you (U.S. troops) in the villages and it is creating a bad name for you." He added: "Continuously, I have told the Americans to leave our villages. You are not needed in our villages. There is no terrorism ... so what are you doing in the villages?"
Karzai has often said the insurgent problem in his country springs from support across the border in Pakistan, not from unrest in villages. Critics of the U.S. and NATO military plan also have said that a large military presence, especially in conservative rural districts, encourages violence and bolsters the Taliban argument that it is fighting a foreign occupier.
But a central tenet of the war strategy is that the presence of U.S. and international troops in certain towns and villages is necessary to separate the population from the insurgents, creating space for local, provincial and national government to take firmer root.
The apparently unprovoked killing spree Sunday in two villages in southern Afghanistan, allegedly by a 38-year-old Army staff sergeant trained as a sniper, is only the latest in a string of missteps by American forces. Their mistaken burning of Muslim holy books at an air base in Bagram last month triggered a wave of violent protests across the country and an apology by Obama.
"As tragic as incidents like these are ? and there have been a string of tragic incidents in recent weeks ? it would be just as tragic, if not more, if we let it affect the overall mission, which is having success," said a Pentagon spokesman, Navy Capt. John Kirby. "And it's just as wrong to extrapolate from those incidents some sort of overarching belief or notion that it (the U.S.-Afghan partnership) is failing."
The cascading events stole attention from what Kirby and other U.S. officials believe is important battlefield progress, at least in the south and southwestern sectors of Afghanistan. Defense Secretary Panetta visited the country this week and wound up fielding questions about whether the recent episodes have set back the war effort and whether the timetable to withdraw troops -- pieced together so carefully more than a year ago -- should be accelerated.
U.S. analysts, meanwhile, see a lack of clarity and commitment in the Obama administration strategy for winding down the war.
Stephen Biddle, a military expert at the Council on Foreign Relations, said Thursday the administration's approach is "confused and uncertain."
The administration has essentially tried to use "real but limited means to secure real but limited ends" in Afghanistan, a strategy that carries the risk of ending up a "more expensive version of doing nothing," he told reporters.
"That's unfortunately where limited efforts so far are in danger of taking us," Biddle said.
