NBA union leader Billy Hunter made big bucks despite labor strife

While NBA players were locked out as their leaders tried to hammer out a new collective bargaining agreement, their union's executive director, Billy Hunter, was not missing any paydays.

Hunter made $3 million in salary this last year, when the NBA played a compacted 66-game season and players missed paychecks during a lengthy lockout. It was a 25% salary increase, according to Bloomberg news service.

By comparison, DeMaurice Smith, the NFL Players Assn. executive director, made $1.38 million this last season, although the players did give him a $1-million bonus after he led negotiations that landed a new 10-year labor deal with the nation's most popular league. Michael Weiner, the leader of the MLB Players? Assn., made $1 million.

"If I?m a rank-and-file member of this union I?ve got to ask myself -- Is Billy really worth three times the guy at MLBPA?? said Paul Swangard of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon, in an email to Bloomberg.

Hunter, 69, was the only labor leader of a players' union to draw a salary during work stoppage. The salary disclosure also comes as the NBA union is under investigation for its financial and business practices, including nepotism, an issue first raised by union President Derek Fisher.

"With legitimate questions swirling about whether the NBPA has become Hunter Family Inc., Billy should be focused on clearing his name, not padding his paycheck," Swangard said.

Don Fehr, head of the NHL Players Assn., is not being paid during the hockey lockout.

"It?s both a measure of solidarity and uniformity of interest," Fehr said. "You want the players to understand you?re in the same boat they are. You don?t have interests different than they do. We think it?s important."

Mexico captures Zetas cartel capo 'El Taliban': navy

The Mexican navy brought a suspected leader of the brutal Zetas drug cartel before news cameras Thursday, after catching the capo amid a violent rift within the powerful criminal gang.

The 42-year-old Ivan Velazquez Caballero, known as "Z-50" and "El Taliban," stood stone-faced as marines presented him to the press, wearing a checkered long-sleeve shirt and a bullet-proof vest with two other captured suspects.

Marines detained Velazquez Caballero on Wednesday in a house in the central city of San Luis Potosi, from where he directed operations in four central and northern Mexican states, the navy said.

He was on the list of the 37 most wanted drug lords -- with a $2.3 million reward for information leading to his arrest.

The arrest shed light on a feud within the Zetas, with the navy saying Velazquez Caballero had defied one of the cartel's bosses.

But while the Zetas are divided, the arrest will likely not disrupt the cartel's operations because it is set up like a franchise with cells spread out in various states, analysts said.

"It's important, because El Taliban was a violent and cruel figure, but it does not weaken the Zetas," said Ricardo Ravelo, author of the book "Five Stories of the Zetas."

Velazquez Caballero had allegedly been the Zetas' regional capo in Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato and Coahuila states since 2007, said navy spokesman Jose Luis Vergara, a vice admiral.

"Some sources say he challenged Miguel Trevino Morales, alias 'Z-40,' starting a struggle for control of San Luis Potosi," Vergara said.

The power struggle is believed to have led to the execution of 14 of Velazquez Caballero's followers in San Luis Potosi in August, he added.

Mexico has been in the grip of a brutal drug war that has left some 60,000 people dead since the launch of a military crackdown against the cartels in 2006.

Authorities have attributed a series of murders near the US border in recent months to disputes among the Zetas.

Two weeks ago, 16 bodies were found in the border city of Nuevo Laredo. Nine of the bodies were hanging from a bridge, with messages from Zetas-linked gangs accusing each other of treason.

A navy source, who requested anonymity, told AFP that Velazquez Caballero had approached Gulf Cartel leaders to seek an alliance against Trevino Morales.

The weekly magazine Proceso has reported that Velazquez Caballero had posted street signs in the north and online videos accusing Trevino Morales of betraying some of his lieutenants and ratting them out to the authorities.

US authorities say the Zetas, who are led by Trevino Morales and Heriberto Lazcano, are one of Mexico's most powerful gangs alongside the Pacific region's Sinaloa federation, led by fugitive Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Much of the northeast is in the clutches of the Zetas cartel, which was founded by former Mexican special forces soldiers who went rogue and are known for decapitating and dismembering their enemies.

The Zetas were originally hired as enforcers for the Gulf Cartel, but turned on their employers and have fought them for control of lucrative drug routes to the United States.

The navy struck a major blow against the Gulf Cartel this month, arresting its suspected kingpin, Jorge Eduardo Costilla, alias "El Coss," and another senior leader, Mario Cardenas Guillen, known as "El Gordo."

The weakening of the Gulf Cartel and Zetas infighting could clear a path for Guzman to grab the northeast coast, analysts said.

"This is great news for El Chapo. I'm sure he's sitting back and laughing right now," said Sylvia Longmire, a former US Air Force special agent and author of "Cartel: The Coming Invasion of Mexico's Drug Wars."

"I'm sure El Chapo can work this to his advantage," she told AFP. "And I'm sure he's going to try."

Attempted attack on Israeli border highlights militant presence in Sinai

One soldier from the Israel Defense Forces was killed and another wounded in an attack on the Sinai border today, while three militants were killed.

Israel said it disrupted an attempted large-scale terrorist attack on its southern border today, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by militants in the Sinai peninsula, who have stepped up their attacks since Egypt's popular uprising last year.

Israel's military said it killed three militants who crossed into Israel midday near Har Harif with weapons and explosive belts. One soldier from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was killed and another wounded in the exchange of fire. The last time an Israeli soldier was killed by militants from the Sinai was August 2011, according to the IDF.

Israel has long been concerned about security in the Sinai peninsula, which it captured in the 1967 Six-Day War but ceded after making peace with Egypt in 1978.

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's regime responded harshly to terrorist attacks in the peninsula, particularly after a 2004 attack that killed 34 in the tourist city of Taba, as The Christian Science Monitor's Dan Murphy pointed out recently. But with Mr. Mubarak's ouster last year and the formation of a new government dominated by the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, Israel has voiced concern that Egyptian security in the Sinai has taken a backseat.?

The deterioration in security has been bad for both sides, however. In August, 16 Egyptian border guards and soldiers were killed, which prompted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi to?summarily dismiss Defense Minister Mohamed Hussein Tantawi and other top military leaders.

Israel has been building an extensive fence along the Sinai border, which is nearing completion. The Israeli soldiers attacked today were guarding a section of this fence. It's not the first time it has been attacked; in June, two militants attacked IDF contractors involved in building the fence, eliciting a strong statement from Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak that the new Egyptian president must "swiftly" put an end to attacks from the Sinai.

While many have speculated that the Egypt-Israel peace deal could falter under Islamist rule in Cairo, the Sinai poses a challenge for both nations. If they don't find a way to work together, they both may suffer.

T-Mobile leases 7,200 mobile towers to Crown Castle in a 28-year, $2.4 billion deal

TMobile leases 7,200 mobile towers to Crown Castle for $24 billion for 28 years

T-Mobile's just received a hefty cash boost thanks to a tower-leasing agreement it's entered into with Crown Castle. The deal leases 7,200 wireless towers to the infrastructure firm for a term of 28 years in exchange for $2.4 billion -- that T-Mobile's parent Deutsche Telekom will use to pay off debt. As part of the contract, Crown Castle can buy the towers outright when the deal ends in 2040 for a further $2.4 billion -- and is planning to make money by adding another tenant to T-Mobile's system, so depending on your carrier, you might find your coverage suddenly getting a lot better.

Dane-Elec Marvel Universe USB Drives

If you saw the Dane-Elec Marvel Avengers USB Drives and fell in love (I know my geeky heart went pitter-patter) then you'll be smitten once again by Dane-Elec's Marvel Universe USB Flash Drives. These drives combine figures of fan-favorite superheroes?Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Wolverine ($13.49 direct each)?with 4GB of USB storage and extra digital content. With Iron Man being a regular member of the Avengers since the team's inception, and both Spider-Man and Wolverine currently part of the New Avengers line-up, you might say that these three drives are merely rounding out the collection started with the Dane-Elec Avengers USB Drives, but that's more comic-book nitpicking than anything else.

Design and Features
Each Marvel hero is set atop a plain base, which contains the sliding USB drive. Unlike the all-plastic Avengers USB drives, the Marvel Universe drives have a metal USB plug, and the sliding mechanism for extending and retracting the USB is much smoother than the one used on the Avengers drives.

The Marvel drives have 4GB of storage space?as opposed to the 8GBs offered in the Avengers drives?but also include licensed Marvel content, an extra that you won't find offered on other drives. The drives have FAT32 formatting, so they are ready to go right out of the package, and are compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux systems.

The free comics are accessed with a code found on the bottom of the drive. To redeem the code, go to www.marvel.com/getcomics where you'll be asked to enter the code and set up an account with Marvel. For anyone buying one of these drives for a kid, this is a step that a parent definitely needs to supervise?the same page offers subscription sign-ups for $9.99 per month, or $59.88 for an annual subscription.

Also included on the drives are a collection of comic book covers, wallpapers, and custom icons featuring your drive's superhero. This extra content is a mixed bag. The icons are sort of cool, and instructions are included that will walk you through setting them up for a selected file. The included wallpapers are alright, but the covers are downright lousy. All are low resolution and blurry, but the quality is widely varied between one cover and the next and none are particularly good. On many of the covers, the quality is so poor that text is unreadable. Ultimately, the free month of digital comics is the content worth buying these drives for.

Price and Performance
At 4GB selling for $13.49 each, the Dane-Elec Marvel Universe USB Flash Drives come to approximately $3.37 per gigabyte. For a low-capacity flash drive with no encryption or password protection, this is a fairly high cost. By comparison, the Avengers drives were only $1.87 per gigabyte, while the Verbatim Store N' Go Clip-it USB Drive sells for $1.83 per gigabyte. Our current Editors' Choice, the Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ G2 (16GB) , sells for $1.56 per gigabyte, and includes 256-bit AES encryption. Looking at this pricing breakdown, it's clear that the Marvel Universe drives aren't going to be a value buy, but they are still reasonably priced and have sufficient extras to make them a worthwhile purchase for the die hard comics fan in your life.

While these are novelty drives, sold as toys and collectibles rather than high-performance storage, the performance isn't bad and falls in line with similarly priced drives. When tested using our timed file transfer test, the Marvel Universe drives had speeds of 30MBps (read) and 4MBps (write). The slower write speed means that you'll probably want a different drive for storing and transferring large media files, but for documents and photos, these drives will do just fine. Though the write speed is on the slow side, read speed is as good or better than several competitors, like the Verbatim Store N' Go Clip-it (15MBps read; 6MBps write) or the Victorinox Swiss Army Slim Flight (24MBps read; 6MBps write). They also offer better speeds than the Avengers drives (16MBps read; 4MBps write), though they still offer only half the capacity.

The Marvel Heroes USB Flash Drives may not boast any special powers, like encryption or password protection; for those sorts of features, take a look at the Editors' Choice Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ G2, which offers both. The Marvel Drives do, however, offer reasonably priced storage in a cool, collectible design that will have strong appeal for any comic book fan. Add the inclusion of free digital comics, wallpapers, and custom icons, and it's easy to see that these are great drives for any superhero fan.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Dane-Elec Marvel Universe USB Drives with several other flash drives side by side.

What Causes Ocean "Dead Zones"?

Mississippi River DeltaBLOOM WITH A SPEW: Perhaps the most infamous U.S. dead zone is an 8,500-square-mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico, not far from where the nutrient-laden Mississippi River, which drains farms up and down the Midwest, lets out. Image: Robert Simmon, NASA

Dear EarthTalk: What is a ?dead zone? in an ocean or other body of water??Victor Paine, Tallahassee, Fla.

So-called dead zones are areas of large bodies of water?typically in the ocean but also occasionally in lakes and even rivers?that do not have enough oxygen to support marine life. The cause of such ?hypoxic? (lacking oxygen) conditions is usually eutrophication, an increase in chemical nutrients in the water, leading to excessive blooms of algae that deplete underwater oxygen levels. Nitrogen and phosphorous from agricultural runoff are the primary culprits, but sewage, vehicular and industrial emissions and even natural factors also play a role in the development of dead zones.

Dead zones occur around the world, but primarily near areas where heavy agricultural and industrial activity spill nutrients into the water and compromise its quality accordingly. Some dead zones do occur naturally, but the prevalence of them since the 1970s?when dead zones were detected in Chesapeake Bay off Maryland as well as in Scandinavia?s Kattegat Strait, the mouth of the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the northern Adriatic?hints at mankind?s impact. A 2008 study found more than 400 dead zones worldwide, including in South America, China, Japan, southeast Australia and elsewhere.

Perhaps the most infamous U.S. dead zone is an 8,500 square mile swath (about the size of New Jersey) of the Gulf of Mexico, not far from where the nutrient-laden Mississippi River, which drains farms up and down the Midwest, lets out. Besides decimating the region?s once teeming shrimp industry, low oxygen levels in the water there have led to reproductive problems for fish, leading to lack of spawning and low egg counts. Other notable U.S. dead zones today occur off the coasts of Oregon and Virginia.

Fortunately, dead zones are reversible if their causes are reduced or eliminated. For example, a huge dead zone in the Black Sea largely disappeared in the 1990s following the fall of the Soviet Union, after which there was a huge spike in the cost of chemical fertilizers throughout the region. And while this situation was largely unintentional, the lessons learned have not been lost on scientists, policymakers and the United Nations, which has been pushing to reduce industrial emissions in other areas around the globe where dead zones are a problem. To wit, efforts by countries along the Rhine River to reduce sewage and industrial emissions have reduced nitrogen levels in the North Sea?s dead zone by upwards of 35 percent.

In the U.S., dead zones have also been reduced in the Hudson River and San Francisco Bay following clean-up efforts. Hypoxic conditions continue to plague the Gulf of Mexico, however, with matters made worse by pollution unleashed by Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill, as well as by a federal push to increase Midwest corn production, which effectively loads even more algae-inducing nutrients into the already overloaded system. The Mississippi Basin/Gulf of Mexico Water Nutrient Task Force, a coalition of federal, state and tribal agencies, has been busy monitoring the dead zone and recommending ways to reduce it since its formation in 1997. But with industrial and agricultural activity throughout Gulf and Midwestern states only increasing?and Mother Nature not making the job any easier?the task force has an uphill battle on its hands to say the least.

Market On Holly (And A Preview Of Market On Holly's Bodega!) | Los ...

We?d heard of The Market On Holly before and always figured it was Pasadena?s answer to The Oaks Gourmet, Joan?s On Third, and Olive & Thyme. That was a correct assumption, for the most part: it?s a gourmet food and drink spot in Pasadena that has everything from pre-made cold salads to cheese and charcuterie to beer and wine to a CSA (which we don?t believe the other places have?). They are a bit more of a dine-in eating spot or a take-away drink spot but, very soon, they are adding a little market to their store?and we got to take a peek inside of it!

Market On Holly (And A Preview Of Market On Holly's Bodega!)

The place is a white and green tiled, very clean and very simple establishment. Everyone who works there is cool and cute, much like hip farmer people from the Northwest but placed in Pasadena. When you walk in, there?s a coffee station that serves delicious Stumptown Coffee, a factor that made us think twice about going to the Pasadena Intelligentsia. They?re is a pretty large selection of sweet treats that all looked great. We tasted a few (both of which were crunchy, nutty bars whose name we forget) but our coming from a brunch at Kings Row left no room for treat tasting. Glancing at the lunch foods, all of their salads and cold items looked great and a black board of cheese and meats made us very aware of how serious they are about quality and selection. We?ll be back to try it. It also needs to be noted that they do serve brunch on Sundays, something we?ve heard great things about.

The new market they?re opening is their neighborhood Bodega, a mashing of takeaway items, high-end groceries, and essentials. The storefront wasn?t completely done when we visited as they were still awaiting a few items and making the final tweaks on some of the store?s fixtures. That being said, the basic idea of the Bodega was laid out and you could see what their selection was going to be: really well designed, really high-end but accessible food stuffs. There?s a lot of dry pastas, oils, jams, salts, peppers, pickled items, beans, some sweets, and more. The big sell here is that they?ll also be carrying essentials like milk, eggs, and more in their freezer area, which is great for people within walking distance that need a quick grocery pickup. The space is a little tiny but it definitely drew in four or five different groups of foot traffic people as we stood within it: the need for the Bodega was very obvious.

Market On Holly (And A Preview Of Market On Holly's Bodega!)--Bodega

The Market and Bodega is located on Holly, which you?ve probably deduced from the name of the place. The strip they?re located on is a pretty sweet strip of nice old buildings and local businesses (save for the Subway, who did seem ashamed to be there). It?s a nice little walking area removed from the hullaballoo of Colorado and?for you food lovers?is a destination for you. The Bodega isn?t quite yet open but should be opening soon: keep tabs on their Facebook and Twitter for an idea of when their doors will be open. It should be open any day now.

UPDATE: Market On Holly?s Bodega is NOW open according to their Facebook. They also have fresh bread and local eggs in stock, flowers and Straus dairy coming tomorrow. Go check it out!

Electronic Communications Regulation Update: Sep. '12 updt ...

"The European Commission today unveiled plans to deal with the exponential growth in mobile and wireless data traffic by enabling wireless technologies, including broadband, to share the use of the radio spectrum.

With new technologies it is possible to share radio spectrum amongst several users ? such as internet providers ? or use the spectrum available between TV frequencies, for example, for other purposes. National spectrum regulation often does not reflect the new technical possibilities, leaving mobile and broadband users at risk of poor service as demand grows, and preventing a single market for investment in such communications markets.

A coordinated European approach to sharing spectrum will lead to greater mobile network capacity, cheaper wireless broadband, and new markets such as tradable secondary rights for a given spectrum allocation.

...

As the first measure of the EU's new Radio Spectrum Policy Programme ..., today the Commission calls for:

1) Regulators to support wireless innovation by monitoring and potentially extending the harmonised internal market bands in which no licence is required (so-called licence-exempt bands) through appropriate measures under the Radio Spectrum Decision (676/2002/EC),

2) Fostering consistent regulatory approaches across the EU for shared rights of use that give incentives and legal certainty to all users (current and new) who can share valuable spectrum resources." (see the press release, Q&A and the Communication).

Hubble catches glowing gas and dark dust in a side-on spiral

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has produced a sharp image of NGC 4634, a spiral galaxy seen exactly side-on. Its disk is slightly warped by ongoing interactions with a nearby galaxy, and it is crisscrossed by clearly defined dust lanes and bright nebulae.

NGC 4634, which lies around 70 million light-years from Earth in the constellation of Coma Berenices, is one of a pair of interacting galaxies. Its neighbor, NGC 4633, lies just outside the upper right corner of the frame, and is visible in wide-field views of the galaxy. While it may be out of sight, it is not out of mind: its subtle effects on NGC 4634 are easy to see to a well-trained eye.

Gravitational interactions pull the neat spiral forms of galaxies out of shape as they get closer to each other, and the disruption to gas clouds triggers vigorous episodes of star formation. While this galaxy's spiral pattern is not directly visible thanks to our side-on perspective, its disk is slightly warped, and there is clear evidence of star formation.

Along the full length of the galaxy, and scattered around parts of its halo, are bright pink nebulae. Similar to the Orion Nebula in the Milky Way, these are clouds of gas that are gradually coalescing into stars. The powerful radiation from the stars excites the gas and makes it light up, much like a fluorescent sign. The large number of these star formation regions is a telltale sign of gravitational interaction.

The dark filamentary structures that are scattered along the length of the galaxy are caused by cold interstellar dust blocking some of the starlight.

Hubble's image is a combination of exposures in visible light produced by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys and the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2.

A healthy bond: By improving pain treatment, therapy in dogs, research offers medical insight for humans

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A Kansas State University professor's research improving post-surgery pain treatment and osteoarthritis therapy in dogs may help develop better ways to treat humans for various medical conditions.

From the use of hot and cold packs to new forms of narcotics, James Roush, professor of clinical sciences, is studying ways to lessen pain after surgery and improve care for small animals, particularly dogs. He is working with the clinical patients who come to the College of Veterinary Medicine's Veterinary Health Center.

Because humans and dogs experience some diseases in similar ways, his research may improve how doctors and physicians understand human health, too.

"Several of our projects have human applications, particularly one involving intra-articular prolotherapy," Roush said.

Here's a closer look at three of Roush's current projects:

* A recent project with Ralph Millard, former Veterinary Health Center resident, focuses on ways that hot packing and cold packing affect tissue temperature in beagles and beagle-sized dogs after surgery.

After surgery in both humans and dogs it is common to put a cold pack or hot pack on tissue to prevent and reduce swelling. How long the pack is used and what type of cold or hot pack is used depends on the type of injury and surgery. Roush said that no studies have looked at how deep in the tissue the packs affect temperature and how long the packs must be applied so that the tissue reaches a desired temperature.

The researchers studied the temperature and tissue depth that hot and cold packing affected and the time it took to reach that temperature.

"We found that you don't really need to cold pack anything longer than 10 minutes because there is not a great change in temperature after that," Roush said.

When tissue is cold packed, it will stay cold for a while after the ice pack is removed. But when tissue is hot packed and the pack is removed, the tissue temperature will return to normal much more quickly. Leaving the hot or cold pack on the tissue longer than 10 minutes will extend the time that the tissue stays at the same hot or cold temperature, Roush said. There just will not be a great change in temperature after 10 minutes.

The same technique of hot and cold packing after surgery is also used in humans. Although more research in humans is needed, Roush said there is a strong possibility that a similar 10-minute time frame for hot and cold packing may apply to humans as well.

The research appears in two upcoming publications in the Journal of Veterinary Research.

* For another project, Roush and Matt Sherwood, Veterinary Health Center resident, are using a mat system to study lameness and osteoarthritis in dogs. When dogs step on the mat, it measures the pressure in their step.

The mat system is a useful clinical tool for evaluating and developing treatment of lameness, Roush said. Roush and Sherwood are using the mat for measuring lameness and determining in which leg the lameness is worse.

"We've designed the study to help improve osteoarthritis treatment," Roush said. "We will also use it to measure clinical patients when they come in for regular checkups. We can measure their recovery and a variety of other aspects: how they respond to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, how they respond to narcotics or how they respond to a surgical procedure that is designed to take that pressure off the joint."

* Roush also is working with Marian Benitez, Veterinary Health Center resident, on an analgesic pharmacology study. Rose McMurphy, professor of clinical sciences, and Butch KuKanich, associate professor of anatomy and physiology, are also involved.

The researchers are studying the effectiveness of a painkiller used to treat dogs and researching potential alternatives to the drug. The same drug also is commonly used to treat pain in humans.

"To achieve the drug's effect, the dosage in dogs is much higher than in people," Roush said. "It also may not be a very good analgesic in dogs. We want to see if there is an alternative that requires smaller doses and does not have not as much of a discrepancy for patients."

Marketing The Easy Way Through Social Media Sites | Eric Chua ...

There are many potential customers who use popular social media sites that are willing to listen to what your product or service is about. Creating and sharing content with friends is one of the most popular uses of their accounts. This is how Internet content can spread like wildfire. This is perfect for any business wishing to advertise, since news of sales or promotions can spread equally fast. Read on to learn how to market your company on social media.

Hash tags can be used in Twitter posts to increase your exposure and reach out to the target audience. Figure out which keyword applies best, like #cooking for a recipe or #Toronto for an event you?re hosting in the city. This will give you additional exposure to anyone who searches on those tags or uses them for a feed, and it will also categorize your posts so your followers can better find them.

Host a contest or giveaway on your Facebook page that people can participate in online or in person. The prizes should be products you manufacture. This has the added benefit of getting more of your company?s products into people?s hands. You customer base will enjoy the possibility of winning a prize and the extra exposure for your business is a valuable plus.

TIP! Powerful media isn?t the only thing you need for successful marketing with social media. You also need to optimize how you prepare and display your marketing, and how the user receives it.

Look for industry-related blogs and be a regular commenter on their posts. This will really help your business build a stronger presence online, as well as develop you as an expert on the topic. Make sure the comments are necessary and informative, however. It?s important to be friendly, but it?s more important to be genuinely helpful.

Offer exclusive coupons and discounts to those who follow you on social media sites. When your customers get exclusive deals, it makes them feel special, which makes them more likely to buy from you.

Social Media

TIP! When you are working with social media to market your products, you should not count on just one platform. Bu using many different social media platforms, you spread your business around to many areas and help to generate a bigger customer base.

Buttons, widgets and other apps are your best friends when it comes to holding down a successful social media marketing campaign. Make this an integrated part of your blog and add it to your email signature as well. If you operate more than one social media profile, you should always include links to each one.

Use YouTube to help you get further in your other ventures. YouTube is used and enjoyed by many people. You can make the most of this by setting up your YouTube profile correctly. Be sure to provide detailed, and useful information pertaining to your business, as well as providing links to your blog, or website, to help gain exposure.

Social media marketing can be used to make a more user-friendly storefront. You can set up an easily accessible storefront right on the Facebook site, which exists aside from your primary site. Heavy Facebook users ramble around the site sometimes, and could browse your selection of products, and even buy some, without ever leaving Facebook itself. In this, you can get sales from customers that would rather stay on Facebook than leave it for your dedicated ecommerce website.

TIP! Building your presence on social media networks requires patience. You won?t attract tens of thousands of followers in a day.

Make sure to track your progress. Make sure you establish base statistics showing generated activity and the amount of new followers you get each new week. Link these stats to what you do and from there figure out what works the best. If you aren?t monitoring all your social medial marketing results then it becomes impossible to know what works and what doesn?t.

You can?t use Twitter effectively without hashtags. Tags are preceded by the symbol # so your updates can appear in feeds of other users who subscribe to the same group. The tags should relate to your target audience.

Social Media

TIP! One of the newest trends in social media marketing is hosting an online chat or movement via Twitter or another social networking site. You set a day and time for the get-together and then post up a storm using a chosen hashtag.

Do some research regarding social networking. Even if you use Facebook or Twitter already, establishing a professional social media presence is very different from personal social media use. There are many useful Internet resources and professionals who can advise you with any difficulties you are having.

You should drum up some competition on your Facebook profile. Many people like getting involved with competitions and contests. Have one for your Facebook page; you will see momentum in ?likes?. If you target the right market, you should quickly gain followers.

As was said above, lots of people utilize social media. Content is created then shared with friends and family, which they then share with people they know and in the end, it spreads like wildfire throughout the Internet. Make use of this! The knowledge you gain from reading this article will enable you to successfully market with social

TIP! You always want to ask your clientele for as minimal of initial involvement as you can from them. Forcing your visitors to immediately fill out surveys and personal information is a fast way to lose customers.

Endeavour, riding piggyback atop a modified Boeing 747 jumbo jet, took off from Ellington Field in Houston at 7:03 a.m. CDT (8:03 a.m. EDT/1203 GMT) and is headed for NASA's Dryden Flight Research Facility in Southern California later today, its final pit stop before arriving in Los Angeles on Friday. The shuttle left its Florida home port at NASA's Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday to kick off the three-day trip, which is NASA's final space shuttle ferry flight.

Today, Endeavour and its carrier plane, called the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, will soar over Austin and refuel at Biggs Army Base in El Paso, Texas, before continuing west toward California. On the way, they will fly over White Sands Test Facility near Las Cruces, N.M., (a backup shuttle landing site) and Tucson, Ariz. (home of retired astronaut Mark Kelly, Endeavour's last commander), before arriving at Dryden at 12 p.m. PDT (3 p.m. EDT/1900 GMT). [Photos of Shuttle Endeavour's Final Ferry Flight]

NASA will broadcast Endeavour's arrival at Dryden live on NASA TV and via an online webcast. Find out?how to watch Endeavour land live here.

"Space shuttle Endeavour's final ferry flight has in a way become a traveling museum, an early start to its exhibit at the California Science Center," said Robert Pearlman, editor of the memorabilia and?space history website collectSPACE.com, a SPACE.com partner and contributor. "So many people are getting a chance to see the shuttle up close ? and atop the jumbo jet Shuttle Carrier Aircraft to boot! ??that you can't help but wish the flight wouldn't end Friday in Los Angeles."

Thousands of onlookers watched Endeavour leave Florida as the shuttle flew over the state's Space Coast one last time. In Houston, the home to NASA's Johnson Space Center that houses the shuttle program's Mission Control room and astronaut training center, Endeavour's stopover was a welcome sight.

"Perhaps most poignantly, Endeavour's delivery along the southern half the U.S. has offered the opportunity to pay tribute to the workers who made NASA's space shuttle program a success," Pearlman said. "The stopover in Houston gave thousands at the Johnson Space Center an opportunity to say one last farewell to the vehicle and program they led for 30 years."

Endeavour is NASA's youngest space shuttle?and destined for public display at the California Science Center, its final retirement home now that NASA's orbiter fleet is retired. It made its first flight in 1992 and final flight in May and June of 2011. In all, Endeavour flew 25 space missions.

The flight to California is a homecoming of sorts for Endeavour. The shuttle, along with NASA's other orbiters, was built in Downey by aerospace company Rockwell International, which ultimately became part of Boeing, to replace the orbiter lost in the tragic Challenger shuttle accident of January 1986.

On Wednesday, Kelly said he hoped Endeavour's ferry flight would fly over Tucson so he and his wife Gabrielle Giffords, the former Arizona Congresswoman, would have a chance to see it in flight. Kelly said he also hopes to see Endeavour parade along the streets of Los Angeles when it moves from the Los Angeles International Airport to the science center in mid-October.

Endeavour is the third of the four?NASA space shuttles?heading to museums this year. The shuttle Discovery was placed on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum's Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., in April, with NASA's Enterprise shuttle prototype going on display in New York City's Intrepid Air and Space Museum in July.

The shuttle Atlantis, meanwhile, remains at the Kennedy Space Center and will be delivered to the nearby Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex on Nov. 2. Atlantis' public exhibit will open in summer 2013.

NASA retired its space shuttle program in 2011 after 30 years of spaceflight and 135 space missions. The space agency plans to use commercial spacecraft to ferry astronauts to and from low-Earth orbit while developing its own new spacecraft and rockets for deep-space exploration.

It's election season again and 2012 is likely to be remembered for many things, one of which is the amount of money spent on political advertising. Indeed, this year's Presidential Campaign is likely to be the most expensive in history.
